Details

A-level Physical Education qualifications allow students to play to their strengths and gain dynamic theoretical and practical skills for further education or work. We aim to develop and create motivated learners who embrace challenge through delivering the following course content:

Anatomy 

Skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory systems and muscle fibre types.

Biomechanics

Newtons laws of motion and Movement analysis 

Skill acquisition 

-Classification of skills , Transfer/feedback,  Motor programmes,  Theories of learning,  Memory models, Types of guidance,  Types of practice. 

Socio-cultural 

Sport in society , Historical development of sport, Case studies of cricket, athletics football and tennis,  Pre and post-industrial development of Sport in Britain and Public schools.

How will it be delivered?

Year 12

Paper 1: Written paper (35% of A2)
2 hours. 105 marks

Multiple choices, short answer and extended writing (35 marks per section).
Section A: Applied anatomy and physiology
Section B: Skill acquisition
Section C: Sport and society

Year 13

Paper 2: Written paper (35% of A2)
2 hours. 105 marks

Written/practical coursework ( 30% coursework) Internal assessment, external moderation.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in GCSE Physical Education or BTEC Sport/ Cambridge Nationals Sports Science plus Competence in a specific sport. Grade 5 in English and Maths. Grade 5 in Biology or Additional Science.

If you love the sport and want to develop your skills and knowledge in order to pursue a career in the sports and leisure industry, then this course is for you. Sports scientists are involved in all aspects of sports performance from grassroots to elite level. Students may also go on to complete further studies in medical fields such as physiotherapy. The course also prepares students for Physical Education teaching at a primary and secondary level. It combines up to date knowledge of the sport and leisure industry with the right balance of practical learning and assessments.
