Course Summary

This qualification aims to introduce learners to the use of counselling skills in everyday life and work, and some of the approaches that underpin the use of these skills. This qualification gives learners the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills and engage in a helping interaction appropriately.

This qualification is useful for anyone who would like to develop their use of counselling skills for use in either work or a personal capacity. There may be learners who wish to progress towards further qualifications or learners who wish to study this programme in order to complement other programmes (health and social care, children’s care, learning and development, voluntary and community work).

Course Details

To be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, learners are required to successfully complete 4 mandatory units:

• Unit 01 Using counselling skills

• Unit 02 Introduction to counselling skills theories

• Unit 03 Diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills

• Unit 04 Counselling skills and personal development

Note to applicants: In this course you will be expected to talk about yourself in a classroom environment. As this is an introduction to the Counselling training you need to be aware that you will be expected to do a lot of self-reflection and this could result in highlighting things that have happened and impacted on your life. You need to think carefully before embarking on this course to ensure that it is the right course for you at this time in your life, as it will not be a place for you to have group therapy – it will be an academic/teaching course that will help you learn and develop counselling skills. Students will need to be prepared to seek outside help/college counsellor if it becomes apparent (or if the tutor advises) that they need to ensure their own emotional safety.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills is internally assessed. There are no examinations, but there will be an assessment of practical skills through role play scenarios.

You must be aged 19 or over. There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification, however, you may find it helpful if they have already achieved a Level 1 qualification.
