Education and Training Diploma Level 5 Part-time (FCHD)

The TQUK Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (RQF) is a 120 credit Diploma which is regulated by Ofqual. It prepares trainee teachers to teach in a wide range of contexts and requires observation and assessment of practice. Teaching practice is a requirement of the qualification.

This qualification is suitable for teachers, trainers and tutors working in further education, adult and community learning or work based training within public, private, voluntary or community organisations.

Amongst other skills, you will learn to:

Plan and develop schemes of work

Deliver learning sessions

Develop teaching and learning strategies

Assessment practices

This is a minimum of a 120 credit award. You must achieve a minimum of 120 credits from two unit groups with a minimum of 61 credits at level 5.

There is a requirement for a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice.

Group A – 75 Credits (these are the mandatory units and make up 55 of the minimum 61 credits needed with 20 credits being at level 4)

Group A is made up of four mandatory units and all 75 credits must be achieved from this group:

Unit 1 Developing Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training

Level 5 20 credits

Unit 2 Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training

Level 4 20 Credits

Unit 3 Theories, Principles and Models in Education and Training

Level 5 20 Credits

Unit 4 Wider Professional Practice in Education and Training

Level 5 15 Credits

To pass this part of the qualification, you MUST achieve both units 1 and 3. This is because they contain the teaching element of the qualification and the 8 observations.

This mandatory part of the qualification is centred on learning about, and demonstrating competency in a teaching and learning environment. It looks at planning, teaching, learning and assessment theory, behaviour management theory and strategies and wider issues of professionalism such as the effects of Government policy and the role of stakeholders and external bodies.

Group B are all optional units and a mix of level 4 and level 5 units.

Group B is made up of a number of optional units and you can pick and choose from these. It is important that you choose the units carefully as they are not ‘taught’ and you will undertake the units on an individual research basis with 1:1 tutorial support. Some of these units require an observation or evidence from an actual working environment, such as resources, lesson plans of schemes of work. These observations are in addition to the 8 required to fulfil the requirements of Units 1 and 3. The optional units available are shown below:

Specialist delivery techniques and activities – 9 credits

Understanding and managing behaviours in a learning environment- 6 credits

Understanding the principles and practices of externally assuring the quality of assessment – 6 credits

Understanding the principles and practices and internally assuring the quality of assessment – 6 credits

Level 5 Units

Action research – 15 credits Developing and using and organising resources within a specialist area – 15 credits

Managing behaviours in a learning environment – 6 credits

There are no examinations. You will be assessed by production of a portfolio of assignments and observation of your teaching practice.

You will need the following qualifications to be able to enrol on the course:

A minimum of a Level 3 in their specialist subject (i.e. the subject you want to teach)

GCSE English Language at grade 4/C or above

GCSE maths at grade 4/C or above (or hold a Functional Skill Maths Level 2 qualification and be prepared to enrol to complete the GCSE alongside the level 5)

Prior to enrolment, each learner will also need to provide evidence of:

A placement where 100 hours of teaching practice can be completed

A named mentor within the placement who should have a full teaching qualification in place and be qualified to a minimum of Level 3 in the subject area to be taught
