Course Summary

This qualification will develop the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people in a residential childcare setting. This qualification enables you to gain essential skills and knowledge to support children and young people in residential childcare settings, including: well-being and resilience, positive relationships and attachments, health and safety, sexual exploitation, communication, positive behaviour and positive outcomes.

Course Details

You will study the units listed below until you reach a minimum of 61 credits. You will also study:

Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) booklet

Level 2 Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT (If not already achieved)

Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Units

Understand the development of children and young people in residential childcare.

Understand how to safeguard and protect children and young people in residential childcare.

Understand how to support children and young people who have experienced harm or abuse.

Promote effective communication and information handling in residential childcare settings.

Support risk management in residential childcare. Assessment and planning with children and young people in residential childcare.

Support group living in residential childcare.

Understand how to support positive outcomes for children and young people in residential childcare.

Support attachment and positive relationships for children and young people in residential childcare.

Support the wellbeing and resilience of children and young people in residential childcare.

Support children and young people in residential childcare to achieve their learning potential.

Support children and young people in residential childcare to manage their health.

Support the development of socially aware behaviour with children and young people in residential childcare.

Engage in professional development in residential childcare settings.

Support the rights, diversity and equality of children and young people in residential childcare.

Participate in teams to benefit children and young people in residential childcare.

You will also study optional units.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will be assessed using a portfolio of evidence, observations in the workplace and assessment tasks. You will be assessed both in college and in your place of work.

Entry requirements

Learners will need to be at least 18 years of age. Some settings require you to have a suitable Level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care or Childcare and four GCSEs at grade A*-C plus GCSE English at grade 4 or above

It is desirable that you have English and maths at grade C/4 or above but this is not essential as Functional Skills can be delivered as part of the Apprenticeship programme

You need to be employed within a health and social care setting or have an employer in this area willing to take you on as an apprentice

As your programme may involve working with children, you will be required to undertake a satisfactory Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check

Equipment required

The course uses an online portfolio so access to a computer and the internet will be required. If this is not possible, a paper based portfolio could be accessed.

Upon completion you could progress onto the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Young People’s Services or apply for job roles including:

Residential Childcare Workers.

Registered Residential Childcare Managers, Deputy Managers and Assistant Managers (further professional development or qualifications may be required once in post).

Managers, Deputy Managers and Assistant Managers in other adult or children and young people’s social care settings (further professional development or qualifications may be required once in post).
