Course Summary

The course focuses on the link between life style and health, to include a study of heart, lung or sense and body defence mechanisms. In addition students study the variety of life and the implications of biotechnology in modern society.


Students focus on the effect of human activity on the diversity of living things and they consider how humans maintain their constant internal environment.

Course Details


• 1 Biological molecules

• 2 Cells

• 3 Organisms exchange substances with their environment

• 4 Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms

• 5 Energy transfers in and between organisms

• 6 Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments

• 7 Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems

• 8 The control of gene expression

There will be a minimum of 12 practical’s carried out throughout the course which will be assessed in a written paper.

Students will be expected to complete all home learning to a good standard and on time. Students need to be able to show a level of independence which includes revisiting notes and seeking help when needed. Attendance to extra progress support sessions is compulsory when underperforming, however attendance by all is encouraged

How will it be delivered and assessed?

100% examination at the end of the course. There will be a minimum of 12 practical's carried out throughout the course which will be assessed in a written paper.

Entry requirements

Min 6 in single GCSE Biology or 6.6 in Combined Science + 4 other Grade 9-4 GCSEs (must include a 5 in English and Maths)
