Course Summary

Bench joinery is the preparation, setting out, and manufacture of joinery components while site carpentry focuses on the installation of the joinery components and on the setting out and fabrication of timber elements used in construction. Learn how to work with wood and become a professional carpenter as you find out how to build floors, roofs, doors and stairs.


Level 1 introduces you to carpentry and joinery skills and allows you to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in carpentry or joinery.

Course Details

To achieve the Level 1 Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery learners must achieve a minimum of 15 credits, 3 credits from the mandatory unit and a minimum of 12 credits from the optional units.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Throughout the study programme your work will be assessed for a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. Achieving this qualification means that you have reached the standards expected by the industry.

Entry requirements

Three GCSEs at grade 2 or above including English or successful interview with an initial assessment in English and maths at Entry Level 3 or above.

Equipment required

Work boots, gloves and eye protection will need to be purchased prior to starting your course, financial assistance may be available.

Your next steps...

Sucessful completion of level 1 could lead to onto a Level 2 study programme in site joinery. Alternatively, you could use the qualification to improve your chances of gaining an Apprenticeship which will give you valuable work experience.
