Course Details

What you will study

You will study theoretical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks.

Compulsory topics for all pathways include:

• Construction Principles

• Construction Design

• Health and Safety in Construction

• Construction Technology

• Graphical Detailing (Including an introduction to CAD and BIM)

• Building Regulations

• Building Surveying

For the ‘Quantity Surveying’ pathway you will take the following unit :in year 2 of study:

• Tendering and Estimating

• Measurement Techniques

• Management in Construction

• Project in Construction

• Structural mechanics

• Property maintenance and conversion


How will it be delivered and assessed?

Two of the units are externally assessed.

Construction Principles is assessed through a 90 minute written examination, taken in January or May/June.

Construction Design is assessed through a piece of externally set and marked coursework carried out in a supervised environment.


Entry requirements

4 GCSEs 9-4, including English, Mathematics and Science.

Where you do not meet the entry requirements but have achieved GCSE grades 9-3 in English and Maths there is the opportunity to study the Extended Certificate in the first year to support the retake of these GCSEs.


Your next steps...

Further study

Typically learners progress to a second year to complete an Extended Diploma. However some learners do progress to employment and return to study the Higher National Certificate on day release.

Career Opportunities

This course will enable you to progress your career into areas such as architecture, quantity surveying, building surveying, civil engineering and building services engineering. These jobs combine both office and on –site based activities.

Progression to direct employment in the sector could be as:

• trainee site engineer

• trainee quantity surveyor

• trainee technician estimator/buyer/planner

• trainee construction design technician.
