Musical Theatre

This qualification offers an engaging programme to support learners who want to pursue a career in musical theatre and performance.

This size of qualification allows learners to study related and complementary qualifications alongside it, without duplication of content.

It can prepare learners for a range of Apprenticeships in performance-related areas. When taken alongside further Level 3 qualifications, it supports access to a range of higher education courses in the performing arts sector.

There are two common mandatory units within the qualification, which cover the following aspects of performance:

• developing skills and techniques for performance

• group performance workshop.

Content that is common to all pathways is designed to give a general grounding that is relevant to all.

Content for the musical theatre pathway is designed to enable the learner to begin to specialise in this area where there are more specific technical job roles or further training opportunities.

Unit 12 – Contemporary Dance techniques

Unit 14 – Choreography for live performance

Unit 20 – Developing the voice for performance.

Unit 23 – Singing techniques for performers.

Pass or above in Performing Arts or Merit in Music + 4 other Grade 9-4 or A*-C GCSEs (and the ability to perform in front of a live audience)

A big part of completing a BTEC National is that it gives you an opportunity to develop the key skills, knowledge and expertise that will make the difference to you when starting out on a new career or completing higher education.

For virtually all careers in the performing arts industry, you will need to have the following skills:

● good communication skills

● good interpersonal skills

● the ability to work well as a member of a team

● the ability to lead a team

● the ability to manage your time effectively.
