Course Summary

Toolmakers and Tool & Die Maintenance Technicians are predominantly involved in the highly skilled, complex and specialist detailed work of manufacturing and maintaining the engineering tooling used to produce components, products and assemblies. These products, assemblies and systems affect all of our daily lives, whether it be for travel such as (cars, planes, boats and rail) energy, defence, food, clothing, packaging and health including medical equipment, devices and implants such as joint replacements. This requires the application of a broad range of activities including the interpretation of Engineering drawings and technical instructions and the use of hand, machine and automated computer controlled machine tools and measuring equipment.

The course is delivered by a mixture of theory and practical work, both at College and in the workplace.

Course Details

On this programme you will study towards the product design pathway:

Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence).

Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) – Toolmaker, Tool and Die Maintenance.

Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge).

The apprentice will have a depth and breadth of English and mathematics that allow them to operate successfully within their role. This may be met through entry criteria determined by the employer or qualifications and training within the apprenticeship. There will still be a requirement for 19+ students to attempt Maths and English at L2 if they do not have exemptions due the entry requirements for the BTEC qualifications.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

There will be continuous assessment of both your practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

Entry requirements

Candidates must have an employer willing to support the requirements of the apprenticeship standard.

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their apprentices.

Most candidates will have achieved GCSEs at Grade 9-4 in English and Maths and a STEM - related subject at Level 2 prior to commencement of apprenticeship.

If you do not have these, we can assess your current level of English/Maths.

Only apprentices who began their apprenticeship training when aged 16-18 will continue to be subject to the mandatory requirement to study towards and achieve English and maths. Apprentices who began their apprenticeship training when aged 19+ will no longer be subject to the mandatory requirement to study towards and achieve English and maths. However, for apprentices aged 19+, the apprentice or their employer can still choose for the apprentice to study towards an English and maths qualification. We will continue to fund those apprentices that wish to study towards an English and maths qualification. There will still be a requirement for 19+ students to attempt Maths and English at L2 due the entry requirements for the BTEC qualifications
