Course Summary

Turn your interest in animals into knowledge, practical skills and a future career. At Outwood Academy Hemsworth, this two-year Level 3 T Level combines the science behind animal care with an understanding of animal welfare and the experience of working in the sector. You will explore how animals behave, what keeps them healthy and how to meet their daily needs responsibly. Classroom learning, practical activities and an industry placement will help you develop confidence, teamwork and professional skills. Equivalent in size to three A levels, the course can support progression into employment, apprenticeships or related higher education.

Course Details

Over two years, you will build the knowledge and skills needed to work responsibly with animals. Topics include animal health and welfare; behaviour and communication; nutrition and feeding; animal biology; accommodation and enrichment; safe handling and routine husbandry; hygiene, biosecurity and safe working practices; and sustainability and the wider animal sector. You will also develop observation, record-keeping, research, communication and problem-solving skills. Learning combines taught sessions, practical activities and independent study. An industry placement of at least 315 hours, approximately 45 days, provides opportunities to apply your learning in a professional setting and understand the responsibilities of animal-care work.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment combines externally assessed core examinations, an employer-set project and assessments in the chosen occupational specialism. These assess your understanding and your ability to apply technical knowledge and practical skills. You must also complete the required industry placement to achieve the full T Level.
